CSL (Centro Sperimentale del Latte)


CSL (Centro Sperimentale del Latte) is a company founded in 1948 by Dr. Leo Veselyin order to study and increase the value of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and other food grade microorganisms. CSL was the first Italian company to study and demonstrate the importance of LAB cultures for the human organism. From that moment on CSL has pursued the philosophy of its founder combining health, nutritional and food issues, both for humans and animals.

In 2006 CSL has become part of Gruppo Granarolo, Italian leader in the dairy sector, this way confirming the vocation for research and innovation that has characterized the first 60 years of activity of Centro Sperimentale del Latte.

Today CSL studies, develops, produces and sells probiotics, starter cultures, moulds and yeasts for the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, dairy, food and agri-zootechnical sectors.To the industrial work, CSL combines basic and applied research, also demonstrated by the technical-scientific activity of CSL with more than 300 publications between experimental works and reviews.

CSL has two production plants in Italy, in the proximity of Milan:

           •  Zelo Buon Persico: pharmaceutical workshop for the production of API and pharmaceutical bulk

           • Pasturago: production site for food, nutraceutic and agri-zootechnical industry

CSL sells its products on the main world markets through a direct commercial network and distributors all over the world.

 The CSL's LAB Cultures Academy (LACTICA) is a cultural project meant to spread around the world the lactic acid bacteria applied science. The project can count, first of all, onCSL 60 year experience in research, selection, production and practical application of these "man's allies" bacteria.

LACTICA is a combination of distance learning courses and a glossary to better understand the terminology used in the world of lactic acid bacteria.

LACTICA is open to everyone and offers a range of basic and advanced courses, allowing people to acquire operative skills and discover innovative professions, or, simply, to widen one's knowledge by satisfying specific curiosities.

LACTICA can count on strong collaborations between CSL and Italian Universities in the field of applied scientific research on lactic acid bacteria, yeasts and moulds, especially connected to their various practical use.

CSL produces and markets lactic acid bacteria, yeasts and molds used in the food, pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and agri-zootechnical industry. CSL owns a large collection of microbial strains isolated and selected on the basis of their fermentation and functional characteristics.

CSL works closely with end users to optimize production processes and develops new products that meet market needs.
